Felt Flat Roofing in Leicestershire

High-performance built-up felt roofing remains a reliable and cost-effective flat roofing solution, particularly well suited to garages, sheds, outbuildings, and budget-conscious extension projects. Modern felt systems are a far cry from the old mineral felt that earned flat roofs a poor reputation - today, we use modified bitumen membranes reinforced with polyester, providing superior strength, flexibility, and weather resistance.

At Sykes Roofing, we install high-performance felt roofs across Leicester and Leicestershire. We use only premium membranes from leading UK suppliers, ensuring a durable, weathertight roof that will provide years of reliable service.

Modern Modified Bitumen Systems

The felt we install today is modified bitumen - a blend of bitumen with polymers such as SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) or APP (Atactic Polypropylene). These modifiers transform ordinary bitumen into a flexible, UV-resistant, and durable membrane that can accommodate thermal movement without splitting. The membranes are reinforced with a polyester carrier, providing high tensile strength and puncture resistance.

A typical built-up felt system consists of two or three layers, each bonded to the one below, creating a multi-layer waterproof membrane. The top layer is finished with mineral chippings - available in green, grey, or brown - or a reflective coating to protect against UV degradation. This multi-layer approach means that even if one layer is compromised, the others provide backup waterproofing.

Torch-On Application

The most common installation method is torch-on, where the underside of the membrane is heated with a gas torch to melt the bitumen, creating a strong bond to the layer below. This method produces a robust, fully bonded roof system with excellent adhesion. Our installers are fully trained in torch-on application techniques and carry all necessary fire safety equipment.

For situations where naked flames are not appropriate - such as roofs close to combustible materials - we also offer self-adhesive felt systems. These membranes feature a self-adhesive backing that bonds to the substrate without heat, providing a safe alternative with similar performance characteristics.

Deck Preparation & Insulation

A felt roof is only as good as the deck it sits on. We inspect the existing deck - typically timber, concrete, or metal - and repair or replace it as necessary. For new installations, we use moisture-resistant OSB3 or exterior-grade plywood. The deck must be clean, dry, and smooth before the felt is applied.

Building regulations require that flat roofs be insulated to current standards. We install warm deck or cold deck insulation systems using high-performance rigid foam boards, ensuring compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations. We handle all building regulations notifications on your behalf, so you can be confident the work is fully compliant.

Repairs & Maintenance

Felt roofs require periodic maintenance to maximise their lifespan. We recommend an annual inspection to check for blisters, splits, lifted seams, and degraded areas. Small repairs - such as patching a split or re-sealing a seam - can be carried out quickly and cost-effectively, extending the life of the roof.

If your felt roof is approaching the end of its life - typically 15 to 25 years - we can strip and replace it with a new high-performance system. We can also upgrade to GRP fibreglass or EPDM rubber if you prefer a longer-lasting solution. We will assess the condition of your roof during a free survey and provide honest advice on the best course of action.
