Chimney Repair Services in Leicestershire

Chimneys are one of the most vulnerable parts of any roof. Exposed to the full force of the weather above the roofline, they are subject to wind, rain, frost, and temperature cycling that can erode mortar joints, crack bricks, and degrade lead flashings. A damaged chimney is not only a source of leaks but also a safety hazard if it becomes unstable.

At Sykes Roofing, we provide comprehensive chimney repair services across Leicester, Oadby, Wigston, Blaby, Loughborough, Market Harborough, and throughout Leicestershire. From minor repointing to full chimney removal, our experienced team can handle any chimney problem quickly and safely.

Chimney Repointing & Brickwork

The mortar joints between chimney bricks or stones erode over time due to weather exposure. As the mortar degrades, water penetrates deeper into the structure, causing frost damage, spalling, and eventually structural instability. Repointing - the process of removing the old mortar and replacing it with new - is the most common chimney repair we carry out.

We carefully rake out the degraded mortar to the correct depth, then repoint using a mortar mix that matches the original in colour, strength, and composition. For older properties in conservation areas, we use lime mortar to maintain historical authenticity. Properly repointed chimneys are not only weathertight but also look significantly better, restoring the crisp, clean lines of the brickwork.

Lead Work & Flashing

The lead flashing around the base of the chimney - where it meets the roof - is critical for preventing water ingress. Over time, lead can crack, lift, or degrade, allowing water to penetrate the roof space. We renew lead flashings, soakers, and aprons using genuine Code 3, 4, and 5 lead sheet, installed in accordance with Lead Sheet Association guidelines.

In some cases, the existing lead may be intact but has come loose from the brickwork. We can re-fix the lead by cutting a new chase into the mortar joint, inserting the lead, and sealing with a weatherproof sealant. For a completely weathertight result, we often recommend replacing the lead entirely, particularly if it is showing signs of corrosion or fatigue.

Chimney Pots, Flaunching & Capping

Chimney pots can crack, become loose, or degrade over time. We replace damaged pots with new or reclaimed pots to match the original style. The flaunching - the mortar cap that holds the pot in place and sheds water - is also renewed at the same time, ensuring a secure, weathertight finish.

For chimneys that are no longer in use, we can install chimney caps or cowls. These prevent rainwater from entering the flue, stop birds and debris from getting in, and still allow ventilation to prevent damp. Capping is a cost-effective way to protect an unused chimney without the expense of full removal.

Chimney Rebuilds & Removal

In cases where the chimney stack has become severely damaged or unstable, a partial or full rebuild may be necessary. We carefully dismantle the chimney down to sound brickwork, then rebuild it using matching bricks and mortar. This is often the best option for chimneys that have been neglected for many years.

If the chimney is no longer needed - for example, if the fireplace has been removed or the property has been converted to central heating - we can remove the chimney stack entirely. This involves carefully dismantling the stack down to roof level, making good the roof opening, and installing new tiles or slates to match the surrounding roof. Full chimney removal eliminates ongoing maintenance and can free up space inside the property.
